Ian Sutherland's practice focuses primarily on insolvency related matters with an emphasis on residential, commercial and farm foreclosures. Ian has significant experience in all forms of security enforcement, debtor-creditor law and insolvency law, including bankruptcy proposals and reorganizations. He regularly assists financial institutions in collections and foreclosures and has extensive experience acting on behalf of instrument and court appointed receivers, secured parties and other entities in matters relating to the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act and has appeared in courts in several provinces in relation to those matters.
Ian has been conducting residential foreclosure actions on behalf of numerous institutions throughout his practice and currently acts for a number of different financial institutions located in various provinces. He also has extensive experience in residential real estate and judicial sales and regularly acts for mortgagees in transactions related to foreclosure properties. He also deals regularly with property management related issues as well as filing claims with mortgage insurers on behalf of mortgagees where required.
Ian is a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada and has been awarded the “Best Lawyers of Canada” listing in the categories of Insolvency and Financial Restructuring Law and Banking Law. Ian is a member of the Firm's Executive Committee and chair of the Insolvency and Restructuring Practice Team.
