You are just finishing second year law and now need to apply for your articling year.  It seems crazy, but the decision you make now will impact your entire career.  It’s important you consider some factors before applying.

Some of the factors you need to take into consideration include: what kind of environment do you think you will thrive in? Are you an entrepreneur at heart, great at networking and drumming up business or, do you want to work somewhere that provides the work for you? How important is work-life balance? Do you want to work in one very specialized area of the law or are you open to experience all practice areas? 

At McDougall Gauley LLP we have 80 lawyers who practice in a variety of areas.  Our goal is to give students a broad exposure to all that the practice of law has to offer by giving you work in all areas.  Even after articles, those students who are hired on continue to be mentored and learn the practice of law.  Eventually, after 2 to 5 years, you will start to focus your practice on the areas you enjoy, where you will grow and expand your own practice.

Work–life balance is a bit tricky at the beginning of your career with McDougall Gauley LLP.  Students are expected to work hard and be available when needed.  This is not to say you are working all the time, however, be aware that evenings and weekends are not uncommon.
